Long-term Love of Nursing Keeps LPN Going Strong
By Ashtyn Smith, staff writer
For the past 15 years, Deidre M. has made a 3 ½-hour commute every week to her job as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for Nursefinders. Even in the height of winter in Virginia, this grandmother never misses a shift, dedicating herself to the hospital patients and staff that she serves. She arrives on Monday and works per diem shifts through Friday, spending the week with her daughter and grandchildren before returning home.
Deidre describes herself as “blessed” to work with Nursefinders, and said that being a nurse is her favorite thing in the world. She has devoted over 30 years of her life to helping others, dating back to her time as a nurse in the Army.
She worked as a hospital nurse after completing nursing school, and then decided to join the Army. During her two years of active duty, Deidre treated American and British troops and POWs. Never one to stay still, she also spent five years in the reserves while working for Nursefinders; she even had to take a short break from her per diem nursing jobs in 1990 to go with her reserve unit to serve in Desert Storm.
Over the course of her nursing career, Deidre has worked in just about every unit in the hospital, although her favorite has always been the intensive coronary care unit (ICCU). She enjoys the fast-paced environment, the skills she’s gained and the hard-working teams she’s had by her side.
Regardless of where she may be assigned, however, she remains passionate about her nursing job and her role as a patient advocate. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” she reported.
Deidre has maintained a close partnership with Nursefinders for 26 years. Even while working at another company, she continued to work the night shift with Nursefinders. “They are such a great company to work for,” she said. “They are supportive, helpful and concerned about their employees,” adding that it is hard to find a company like that.
When not at work, Deidre is active at her church, assisting with their outreach programs and helping host a bi-annual community dinner to support the local food bank. She loves giving back, in both her personal and professional life.
Deidre is also devoted to her family, and recently celebrated the wedding of her daughter. In addition, she recently welcomed her second grandchild.
Congratulations, Deidre, we’re so happy for you. Thanks for being an integral part of the Nursefinders family!
