Occupational Therapist

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Occupational Therapist assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that help restore vocational, homemaking, and daily living skills, as well as general independence, to disabled persons.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Job duties specific to this position:
• Plans, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy programs to help rehabilitate those impaired because of illness, injury or psychological or developmental problems.
• Tests and evaluates patients' physical and mental abilities and analyze medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goals for patients.
• Selects activities that will help individuals learn work and life-management skills within limits of their mental and physical capabilities.
• Evaluates patients' progress and prepare reports that detail progress. Adjust treatment plan as appropriate.
• Completes and maintains all necessary records and documentation thoroughly, accurately and promptly.
• Trains caregivers how to provide for the needs of a patient during and after therapy.
• Recommends changes in patients' work or living environments, consistent with their needs and capabilities.
• Develops and participates in health promotion programs, group activities, or discussions to promote client health, facilitate social adjustment, alleviate stress, and prevent physical or mental disability.
• Consults with rehabilitation team to select activity programs and coordinate occupational therapy with other therapeutic activities.
• Plans and implements programs and social activities to help patients adjust to handicaps.
• Follows the procedures and policies of the department.


JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English. • Ability to act and communicate professionally at all times. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, caregivers, managers and other staff. • Must be self-directed and able to have appropriate clinical judgment. • In-depth knowledge of standards of practice within the profession of Occupational Therapy. • Ability to follow policies and procedures.

EDUCATION: • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapist program. See certification requirement below.
EXPERIENCE: • Prior experience providing Occupational Therapy to patients in a clinical setting is helpful.
